7 FOMO trading mistakes that lose money (and the fix for each)

MISTAKES6 min read

Most traders don't lose because they pick bad tokens. They lose because they execute the same seven mistakes on good and bad tokens alike.

1. buying the vertical candle

Market-buying into a candle that is already 50% tall means your entry is the crowd's exit. Fix: wait for the first pullback that holds. Missing a runner costs nothing; buying its top costs everything.

2. ignoring liquidity

A $2M market cap with $40K liquidity cannot absorb your $5K sell without a 10% slippage, let alone everyone else's. Fix: liquidity above 5–10% of market cap, or size down to what the pool can handle.

3. oversizing because "this one is different"

Conviction is not information. A bigger position on a stronger feeling is how one trade erases a month. Fix: fixed risk per trade, 1–2% of the account, regardless of how good it looks.

4. no exit before the entry

Without a target and an invalidation, you will hold winners into losers and losers into zero. Fix: write both down before buying. Take a third at 2x. Sell when volume dies.

5. revenge trading the next trending token

A loss creates urgency to make it back, which is the FOMO loop with extra fuel. Fix: after any loss bigger than your risk unit, stop for the session. The market will still be there.

6. trusting screenshots

Profit screenshots are survivorship bias with a filter on top. Nobody posts the twenty losses. Fix: trust time-stamped, verifiable data: when a token started trending, at what market cap, and what happened since.

7. averaging down on a dying memecoin

Adding to a token that is down 60% with falling volume is buying a bigger share of a smaller pie. Memecoins rarely recover; they get replaced. Fix: averaging down is allowed only for assets you would hold for years, which excludes almost everything on a trending list.

the pattern

Every mistake is the same mistake: acting on emotion under time pressure without a number in front of you. The fix is also the same: get the numbers first, decide slowly, execute fast.
