Losses and gains are not symmetric: -50% needs +100%, -90% needs +900%. That is why cutting a loser early matters more than finding the next winner.

how to use the crypto loss recovery calculator

  1. Enter your drawdown in %, or switch to enter the value at the top and the value now.
  2. Read the gain and the multiple needed to recover.
  3. Use the table to compare common drawdowns.

formula

gain needed = 1 ÷ (1 − loss) − 1
multiple needed = 1 ÷ (1 − loss)

the asymmetry of losses

  • -20% needs +25%
  • -50% needs +100% (a 2x)
  • -80% needs +400% (a 5x)
  • -90% needs +900% (a 10x)
  • -99% needs +9,900% (a 100x)

Each extra percent lost costs more to recover than the one before. A memecoin down 90% has to do a full 10x just to get you back to even, which is why most bags that fall that far never recover.

frequently asked questions

How much does a stock or coin need to gain after a 50% drop?

100%. Half of the value is gone, so the remaining half has to double.

I'm down 90% on a memecoin, what does it need to break even?

A 10x, or +900%, from the current price.

Why is recovering a loss harder than making it?

Gains are calculated on the smaller, post-loss amount. After -50% you have half the money working, so it needs to double.
